Application Software

Application software is the subclass of the computer software, which utilizes the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wants to perform. This software should be contrasted with system software that is involved in integrating the various capabilities of computer.

The term “application” refers to both the application software and its implementation. The typical examples of application software include database programs, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, communications and electronic mail and so on.

The multiple applications packed together as a package are also referred to as an application suite. The different applications in a suite generally have a user interface with few common things making it easier for the user to learn and use each application. These often have some capability to interact with each other in various ways good to the user.

For instance, a spreadsheet might also be able to be embedded in a word processor document even though it had been created in separate spreadsheet application. The user-written software enables the systems to meet the specific needs of user. The user-written software includes spreadsheet templates, word processor macros, scientific simulations, graphics and animations scripts. The email filters are also a kind of user software.

The application software is classified into various categories. Enterprise software or business software addresses the needs of organization processes and data flow, often in a large distributed ecosystem. For instance, these are used in Financial, Customer Relationship Management and Supply Chain Management. Departmental software is sub type of Enterprise Software.

Enterprise infrastructure software offers the capabilities needed to create Enterprise Software systems. Information worker software deals the requirements of individuals to create and manage information, often for the individual projects within the department. The examples include the documentation tools, time management, resource management, analytical and collaborative.

Media and entertainment software deals with the requirements of individuals and groups to consume the digital entertainment and published digital content, for example – media players, web browsers, help browsers and games.
